Record-Breaking Global Performance

Netflix's original series "Squid Game" Season 3 has claimed the global number one spot just one day after its release.

According to FlixPatrol, an online content service ranking site, "Squid Game" Season 3 recorded first place worldwide in Netflix's TV program category as of the previous day on the 29th. The series reached number one in all 93 countries where FlixPatrol compiles rankings, including the United States and the United Kingdom. FlixPatrol calculates country-specific scores and rankings based on Netflix's "Top 10" rankings and other metrics.

Building on Previous Success

The rapid ascent of "Squid Game" Season 3 to global number one status within a day of its December 27 release is attributed to the worldwide popularity of its predecessors.

"Squid Game" Season 1, released in 2021, became the highest-grossing content among Netflix's English and non-English TV shows, achieving phenomenal global success. Season 2, released late last year, also immediately climbed to first place in TV show viewership rankings during its first week and ranked third overall among TV shows in cumulative viewings, trailing only "Squid Game" Season 1 and "Wednesday" Season 1.

Many viewers were also eager to see the conclusion, as Season 2's story remained unfinished and continued into Season 3.

Mixed Critical Reception

However, reviews for "Squid Game" Season 3 have been mixed. While international critics gave high scores, general audiences felt it fell short of expectations.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the American film and TV rating site, the Tomatometer score based on critic reviews reached 83%, but the audience score (Popcorn Meter) was only 51%. This means nearly half of the viewers who watched the series gave it negative reviews.

This contrasts sharply with Season 1, which earned a 95% Tomatometer score and 84% audience score, receiving acclaim from both critics and the public.

Critical Commentary

The Washington Times commented, "An Emmy-winning series should have created an emotionally weighted conclusion. 'Squid Game' failed in this regard, ending with a famous actor's cameo appearance and leaving audiences without much to contemplate."

The Guardian noted, "The brutality intensifies, violence continues relentlessly, and satire gradually disappears. While there's spectacle, it's not as sharp as before."
