Special Part #2 G-Dragon "The ‘Super Idol’ Breaking Barriers"

"Übermensch" marks his first new album in seven years since his 2017 mini-album "Kwon Ji Yong", and his first full-length release in 11 years since "Coup d’Etat". The album title, taken from Nietzsche’s concept of the Übermensch (Superman), reflects G-Dragon’s ambition to “transcend himself.”
While some critics argue that the album lacks groundbreaking musical experimentation, public reception has been overwhelmingly positive. Similarly, "Good Day" continues to attract attention despite comparisons to the "Infinite Challenge Music Festival", a legendary segment from producer Kim Tae-ho’s previous hit show.
An industry executive commented, “G-Dragon has always been an icon of innovation in music and fashion. Even if this album doesn’t fully meet expectations, he has maintained his musical relevance while also increasing his relatability through variety shows, successfully capturing younger audiences.”
Overcoming Countless Obstacles to Remain at the Top
G-Dragon’s success is particularly remarkable given the challenges he has faced:
- Being a veteran artist well past the typical idol peak
- Overcoming past controversies, including marijuana-related allegations
- A long hiatus due to military service
- Leaving YG Entertainment to sign with the relatively unknown Galaxy Corporation
Despite these hurdles, he continues to dominate, earning him the title of a "Super Idol"—one who has transcended the traditional limits of K-pop.
Professor Kim Heon-sik of Jungwon University stated, “G-Dragon is the only K-pop artist who writes, composes, and produces while establishing his own unique brand. His ability to continuously evolve his style and artistry has allowed him to maintain his star power, even after years away due to military service.”
