Korean original musical "Maybe Happy Ending" made history at the 78th Tony Awards, winning six major categories and significantly elevating the status of Korean content on the global stage.

At the ceremony held at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday evening (Monday morning Korean time), "Maybe Happy Ending" claimed victories in Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, and Best Actor in a Musical.

The production was nominated in 10 musical categories at this year's Tony Awards and took home six trophies, marking a historic achievement as the first Korean original musical to win major categories including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical. The Tony Awards, established in 1947, are considered the most prestigious honors in American theater and musical theater, often called the "Academy Awards of Broadway."

About the Production and Broadway Journey

"Maybe Happy Ending," which premiered in Korea in 2016, tells the story of two helper robots named Oliver and Claire who fall in love in near-future Korea. The musical explores themes of love, humanity, and what it means to be alive through the lens of artificial intelligence.

The production made its Broadway debut in November of last year, officially opening at the Belasco Theatre in Manhattan. Due to enthusiastic audience response, the run has been extended through January 17, 2025.

Historic Achievement for Korean Musical Theater

While this marks the second time a Korean musical has won Tony Awards—following costume designer Linda Cho's win for "The Great Gatsby" at the 77th Tony Awards last year—"Maybe Happy Ending" represents the first Korean original musical to win in major categories such as Best Musical.

This achievement demonstrates the international competitiveness of Korean performing arts content and marks a pivotal moment in Korean musical theater history. The success of "Maybe Happy Ending" on Broadway showcases how Korean storytelling and creativity can resonate with global audiences, paving the way for more Korean theatrical productions to find success on the world's most prestigious stage.
