Yoon Byul Ballet Company Presents Sold-Out Production "GAT"
A unique work that transforms Korea's traditional hat "gat" into Western ballet is taking the stage. Yoon Byul Ballet Company is presenting "GAT," which achieved a complete sellout during its premiere last year.
Company Background and Artistic Vision
Yoon Byul Ballet Company is composed of professional dancers from domestic and international ballet companies, centered around artistic director Yoon Byul, who is among Korea's most active in the field, and choreographer Park So-yeon, recognized for her outstanding choreographic abilities. The company presents diverse works ranging from classical performances to creative ballet.
Nine-Chapter Cultural Journey
"GAT" constructs thematic works according to class and situation through Korea's traditional hat "gat." The performance consists of nine chapters: Women's Black Hat (여흑립), State Hat (주립), Court Hat (정자관), Bamboo Hat (삓갓), Flat Hat (패랭이), Bride's Headdress (족두리), Men's Black Hat (남흑립), Scholar's Hat (문인화), and Hat Crafting (갓일). The work aims to provide an intriguing perspective by interpreting Korean history, costume, and traditional values through ballet.
Star-Studded Cast
This performance features dancers who gained attention on Mnet's "Stage Fighter," including Kang Kyung-ho, Kim Yu-chan, and Jung Sung-wook, alongside Yoon Byul, Park So-yeon, Park Ji-soo, Park Jung-eun, and other dancers actively performing in domestic and international ballet companies.
Innovative Artistic Approach
"GAT" seeks to showcase Korea's unique beauty and technique by setting a new prop (gat) that had not received attention in performance art works centered on Korean folk tales as a choreographic object. The production composed various thematic stories according to the utilization of "gat" based on class and situation, followed by musical collaboration incorporating related content.
Contemporary Cultural Connection
A video that could be described as a ballet version of "K-Pop Demon Hunters Lion Boys" captures the energetic spirit seen in the animation, bridging traditional Korean culture with contemporary artistic expression.
